What I do

I compose original musical scores for the screen.

Hi there, I’m Alex. I’ve been pretty obsessed with sound, music, and how they affect us in so many ways since I was 5 and used to go every week to the Conservatoire de Paris in Pantin. Here was a pure musical experience, no training, just unadulterated sound. Since that formative experience my ears are still alert to the sounds and music that accompany us in our everyday lives. I write music, sure, but I still love to experiment with sound, mic’ing things up in my studio in different ways to see how they work. I’ve studied piano and drums professionally, toured Russia (with Stoloff & Hopkinson), Japan (with my solo project ‘Stoloff’) and France (with Statik Sound System), and had several releases internationally.

I’ve also scored over a hundred tv documentaries, short films, and corporate videos, ranging from a few Wildlife on Ones to multi award winning short films. As Madeleine Carter from National Geographic once commented ” Alex is one of my favorite documentary composers in the entire world. His creative use of both sounds and music creates exactly the right tone for a scene”. Hence, I’m an all-rounder, though take extreme pride in intuitively pinpointing a projects identity to give it the precise flavour it requires. Shazaam!

My non-conformist approach has led me to collaborate several times with the world’s leading naturalist Sir David Attenborough, winning a Golden Panda Award at Wildscreen (the natural history Oscars) for ‘Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur’ in 2016 and Best Animal behaviour short form in 2019 from Jackson Wild for ‘The Great Pretender’.

My Method

Need Music? I’ve got you covered.

In this day and age authenticity is the key to making your project shine, and that’s exactly what I do… specialise in creating unique musical scores fluent in the language of your production. With two decades of sound-led storytelling under my belt I’ve learnt to listen, create, and compromise.

Recent Work

Check out some of the dopest clips from recent shows I’ve worked on.

One Billion Nets, One Billion Steps

An awesome little film narrated by Charlize Theron about Vestergaard’s attempts to help halt Malaria in Africa by producing and delivering mosquito nets out there. Was shown at the UN General Assembly in New York on the 22nd September 2023 to critical acclaim.

ORF Universum – Das Ei (The Egg)

Weaver Birds

A clip from ORF Universum’s ‘Das Ei’ (The Egg) show about… eggs! This clip’s about weaver birds, the little birds who live in the Kalahari and build these insane huge nests to lay their eggs in.

Push Me, Pull You!

In 2011 I started talking to Apocalyptic Circus (Tom Richmond & Linn Broden) about collaborating on a live performance score for them. They were due to have a residency at the Spoffin Festival in Amersfoort, Holland and wanted me to come along to develop the music while on site with them. After successful performances at Spoffin and later at Circomedia we were asked to develop the show further at the wonderful Mirabilia Festival in Savigliano, Italy and following that, the show had a very well received run at The Oxford Playhouse. It was a fantastic experience, developing a score as the performers and director were developing the show, and I think it’s some of the best music I’ve written.

Echoes

My best friend from high school approached me to score this short film about the 7/7 bombings in London which she was making for her Masters in Screendance at the London Contemporary Dance School. I love the choreography in this film and how the subject was approached so sensitively and poetically.

Hidden Kingdoms of China Special – Golden Snub-Nosed Monkeys

Another clip from the awesome Hidden Kingdoms of China Special for Nat Geo. I felt this sequence really lent itself to electro sounds, it’s almost as if the monkeys are dancing in the snowy landscape (i.e. the club).
